Je tenais à vous dire encore une ou deux choses : ironie – ne vous laissez pas dominer par elle, surtout pas dans les moments non créateurs. Pendant que vous créez, cherchez a vous en servir comme un moyen de plus d’appréhender la vie. Utilisée de manière pure, elle est alors pure aussi, et il ne faut pas en avoir honte ; si vous vous sentez trop proche d’elle, redoutez cette familiarité croissante, et tournez-vous alrs vers de grands et sérieux sujets qui la font petite et désemparée. Recherchez la profondeur des choses : l’ironie ne descend jamais si loin ; et si vous voyagez aux confins de la grandeur, examinez en même temps si cette manière de voir ressortit à une necessite de votre nature. Sous l’influence de sujets graves, ou bien cette manière de voir vous quittera (si elle est quelque chose de contingent), ou bien (si elle est votre de manière effectivement innée) l’ironie se renforcera jusqu’à devenir un véritable instrument, et elle prendra place dans la série des moyens dont vous ferez nécessairement usage en cultivant votre art.
